No law requires an independent website to publish its working methodology. It is included here out of conviction: readers have the right to know how the content they read was produced. At a time when most online cultural content looks the same—rewritten press releases, paraphrased Wikipedia entries, and mass-produced rankings—explaining how we work has, paradoxically, become a way of taking a stand.

Here’s ours.

What “Hors Cadre” Is—and What It Isn’t

Hors Cadre is a website dedicated to writing about art. It is not a cultural news aggregator, not an opinion magazine, and not a ranking platform. Its purpose can be summed up in one sentence: to share works that have left a lasting impression, to amplify the voices of the artists who created them, and to inspire people to go out and see what’s happening—first in Paris, but elsewhere as well.

This site makes three assumptions:

A point of view. Hors Cadre is not neutral. When a work moves us, we say so. When an exhibition disappoints, we say so too. The apparent neutrality of institutional critics is often a polite fiction; we prefer to take a stand.

Documented subjectivity. Having an opinion does not mean you don’t need to provide evidence. Every judgment stated here must be supported by verifiable evidence: a textual reference, a primary source, or a historical comparison.

A starting point, not an endpoint. An article in *Hors Cadre* never claims to cover a topic exhaustively. It offers one perspective, provides insights, and points readers toward other resources. The reader’s curiosity is a compliment, not a failure.

How Topics Are Chosen

No editorial board meets to decide what will be published. Topics come from three sources, in descending order of importance:

The works and artists that have left their mark

This is the driving force behind the site. Standing before Caravaggio’s *Saint Jerome Writing* at the Borghese Gallery, before Rembrandt’s self-portraits, before one of Louise Bourgeois’s *Cells*—something happened. *Hors Cadre* seeks to understand what happened and to share it. Emotion comes first, analysis comes second—and both are necessary for an article to come to fruition.

This rule has one consequence: *Hors Cadre* does not cover every topic. Some canonical masterpieces appear here only in passing, because nothing personal could be found to say about them. Conversely, certain works considered minor in the academic hierarchy receive detailed treatment, because they deserve to be championed.

Must-See Exhibitions in Paris and Beyond

Paris remains the natural focal point—that’s where the offerings are concentrated, where people live, and where they visit. But attention is also turned to exhibitions in the provinces and elsewhere, whenever they’re worth the trip or simply worth mentioning. The coverage is organized into three categories (see below), which are clearly distinguished in each article.

The Blind Spots in the Dominant Narrative

Part of the work involves unearthing what others have forgotten. A little-known letter from a famous artist, a theoretical text that has fallen out of fashion, a work rendered invisible by canonical art history. This archaeological dimension is one of the site’s promises: to give voice to what exhibition labels and audio guides leave unsaid.

Three article statuses, clearly distinguished

Hors Cadre publishes three types of content, each with a different level of reliability. This distinction is explained in each relevant article.

Exhibition Reviews

A definitive opinion on an exhibition— whether it’s a must-see, one to avoid, or a well-reasoned recommendation —is published only after a physical visit to the exhibition. Without that, it’s not a review; it’s just a paraphrase of a press release, and it has no place here. A note at the bottom of the article specifies the date of the visit.

Exhibition Presentations

When an exhibition is announced or has just opened, Hors Cadre may provide a contextual overview —without offering a personal opinion, focusing instead on the scientific issues, the works on display, and the themes highlighted. These articles are labeled as such and note that a personal review may be published at a later date following a visit.

Feature articles on a work or an artist

The editorial heart of the site. These articles are not tied to current events or physical visits; they are based on detailed research, with sources cited at the end of each article. Their aim is to offer a perspective you won’t find anywhere else—not to summarize what already exists.

The hierarchy of sources

Not all sources are created equal. Hors Cadre uses a clear hierarchy, ranging from the most reliable to the least important.

Primary sources — top priority

When an artist has written, spoken, or left a direct trace in their work, their own words take precedence over all subsequent commentary. This means giving priority to:

Published correspondence (Van Gogh’s 902 letters, Cézanne’s letters to Émile Bernard, etc.)

Personal Diaries (Delacroix, Berthe Morisot, Gauguin)

Manifestoes, theoretical writings, public statements

Recorded interviews, when they are accessible and reliable

This is the site’s core commitment: whenever an artist has spoken about their work, Hors Cadre seeks to give them a voice, rather than paraphrasing critics who themselves paraphrase other critics.

Scholarly sources — references

Next come the works of art historians, curators, and scholars:

Reference Monographs and Catalogs Raisonné

Exhibition catalogs (often the best contemporary writings on an artist)

Accessible scientific journal articles

Documented museum databases (Met Open Access, Rijksmuseum, Paris Musées Collections, etc.)

These sources are preferred over popular science works, except in specific cases where a popular science work is considered authoritative.

Institutional Sources — Verification

The websites of museums, foundations, and cultural institutions are used to verify factual information: dates, dimensions, provenance, and location of the artifact. They are rarely used as sources of analysis because their content is almost always promotional.

Third-party sources — used with caution

General-interest news articles, online encyclopedias, and specialized blogs: used occasionally to cross-check information, but never as the sole source for a significant fact.

Independence and Transparency

This is probably the most important section on this page.

No Hidden Partnerships

As of the date of publication of this page, Hors Cadre has no partnerships, affiliations, or direct or indirect compensation from the institutions, exhibitions, galleries, publishing houses, or platforms mentioned in its articles. The site is funded by its author, period.

If that changes, we’ll let you know

Hors Cadre does not rule out, in the long term, certain forms of monetization: affiliate links to ticket sales sites, clearly identified partnerships, and non-intrusive advertising. But two commitments hold true today and will always hold true:

Any commercial relationship will be explicitly disclosed in the relevant articles, in the footer, and on this Methodology page.

No commercial relationship will influence the editorial content. A ticketing partnership does not obligate us to recommend an exhibition. A book received as a press review copy does not obligate us to praise it. The line between promotion and criticism remains clear-cut—it is precisely what distinguishes Hors Cadre from what this site aims to transcend.

Errors, and How They Are Handled

Hors Cadre makes mistakes. Incorrect dates, uncertain attributions, questionable interpretations. When an error is reported and confirmed:

The article will be corrected as soon as possible.

The correction is explicitly noted at the bottom of the article, along with its date

The error is not silently corrected—transparency regarding corrections is part of the agreement

To report an error, please contact us through the Contact page.

Tone and Writing Style

One last thing—because it matters.

Hors Cadre rejects two common pitfalls in writing about art: academic jargon, which turns emotion into a stylistic exercise, and simplistic popularization, which treats the reader like a child. This site operates on the principle that a curious visitor, without prior training, is capable of understanding why Caravaggio’s Saint Jerome revolutionized the painting of his time—provided that one takes the trouble to explain it without condescension or evasion.

The writing strives to be precise without being technical, engaged without being militant, and personal without being self-absorbed. It is a balance that is always precarious and must constantly be rediscovered.

In a nutshell

Hors Cadre strives to be the kind of website we would have liked to find when trying to understand the works that left a lasting impression on us.

If you’ve read this far, you now know how this site works. The rest is in the articles.

— M

This page is not required.
